![]() On the brighter side, the commission rejected two bad ideas, an unenforceable wealth tax and a value-added tax hidden in the price of goods in place of the visible sales tax. It did lamely “support the use of tax credits and exemptions to reduce the upfront cost of some investments that will make the transition possible, even though in general the commission strives to keep the tax base as broad as possible.” As usual, it noted that revenues from any carbon tax should be used to diminish the burden on lower-income families caused by … the carbon tax. ![]() The commission did, however, stop short of urging a carbon tax or cap-and-trade system to make motor fuel and heating oil so expensive that Vermonters can’t afford them anymore. ![]() Its report avers that “when accounting for the environmental and health benefits, all options considered by the decarbonization study commissioned by the Legislature would result in net benefits.” Actually, the decarbonization report found that the only way decarbonization of Vermont could produce enough “climate benefits” to overcome the conceded loss of economic welfare was to include undefined global benefits enjoyed by the whole world. ![]() Shumlin’s characterization) of the coming climate change end times, without asking whether that mantra is scientifically defensible. The commission obligingly recites the horrors (Gov. So it’s no surprise that the commission addresses taxation as a technique for exacting that contribution. The Legislature that commissioned the report was eager to force everybody to contribute to the campaign to defeat the menace of climate change. The commission recommends some mechanism to hold low-income persons harmless from the effects of the tax on services and goods (notably food) not now taxed but people with incomes above the lower-income line would of course pay the full freight. Most, if not all, of the groups targeted by the services tax will clamor to be exempted, like “health care.” As the exemptions mount, the promised 3.6% tax rate creeps up to 4%, then 5% and maybe further, to raise the same amount of revenues as today’s 6% rate. A sampler: attorneys, architects, accountants, engineers, plumbers, electricians, excavators, truckers, taxi drivers, barbers, cosmetologists, auto repair and investment counselors. The report lists 121 services that could be covered. It’s hard to imagine a single tax change that would produce a more politically potent reaction from thousands of Vermonters faced with collecting and paying the tax over to the government. As a sweetener, it says that the sales tax rate could be lowered from 6% to 3.6%. It proposes that consumers pay the sales tax on scores of service transactions, other than business-to-business exchanges, casual exchanges, and - the big one - health services. The commission wants the sales tax to fall on the widest possible range of goods and services. What economic effect it would have by driving up the income tax rate schedule remains to be seen. The commission believes this will be an improvement.

![]() Rider can also supercharge our ability to write SQL statements. Remember, Rider is looking at string literals, and making the determination if the string contains SQL. If we’re a Dapper user, the same experience applies. ![]() When we get the SQL wrong, Rider will also give us hints on how to fix our issue. Next, we select a session and can choose to attach to an existing console or start a new console. To run our query without having to copy/paste, we can use the Run in Console action. Using Alt+Enter in our SQL string literal, we can see several context actions come available. That’s right! SQL code completion inside a string! Immediately after qualifying as a SQL statement, we start to see syntax highlighting in our string literal. Var command = connection.CreateCommand() Ĭommand.CommandText = "select * from Persons" ![]() static async Task Main()Īwait using var connection = new SqlConnection(ConnectionString) Before continuing, be sure the data source has a Database name specified. Starting with ADO.NET, we’ll see how Rider can identify SQL statements in a string literal. In doing so, it can add tremendous value to any database project. Whether we use established ORMs like Entity Framework, micro-ORMs like Dapper, or roughing it with raw ADO.NET, Rider understands our code. That’s a cool console editor, but let’s see how we can take advantage of Rider in our code base. If our console has more than one SQL statement, we can cycle through each one using the up and down arrow keys on our keyboard. ![]() When toggling Alt+Enter or Cmd+Enter, Rider is kind enough to ask us which scripts we’d like to execute. Rider’s console shows a helpful dialog displaying the data source, schema, table, and first rows of our new table when we are writing our own SQL. Finally, we commit the transaction to our database. We start by double-clicking the newly created Persons table to see the table view. We can then click the + toolbar button to insert a new row. Let’s insert some data into our table using the table view. We first need to be sure we have a database schema selected, after which we’ll create the table in the dbo schema. In this section, we’ll use the UI tools to create a Persons table and insert some data into our database. Rider has many SQL tasks available through context menus and actions. In the previous section, we connected to our SQL Server instance and created a new database named test. The ability to toggle visibility also works at the database where we can show or hide database schemas. We have the option to show all databases or only see the specific databases. If we already have a database instance on our server, we can add it to the list of visible databases by clicking the grayed-out numbers by our connection. What with existing databases? On to the next topic! Adding an Existing Database In the screenshot, we called our database test: We can change the name to whatever we like, and click the Execute button. We’ll see a modal with a preloaded SQL Script. Once we have a working connection, we can create a new database. Use the context menu on our new connection in the Database tab and select New | Database. Now the real fun begins! In the next section, We’ll look at how we can leverage the features in Rider to develop our database-backed applications more efficiently. On a successful connection, we should see the version of SQL Server prefixed with a green checkmark. We can test our connection settings by clicking the Test Connection near the bottom of the modal. Note that Rider will ask us to download a specific driver for our database engine. In the Data Sources and Drivers window, we can enter general connection settings like host, port, user, password, and the default database. In this example, we’ll be adding Microsoft SQL Server. The first step is to click the + button in the top navigation bar, hovering over Data Source, and selecting the database engine of our choice. Some of the immediately recognizable database engines are Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and SQLite. We’ve done extensive work supporting many different database engines. This tool window is our portal to database bliss, where we’ll be able to perform various database administration tasks. If the tab is not visible, it can be made visible using the View | Tool Windows | Database menu. A third option for opening the Database tab (or any other feature in Rider) is to use Go to Action or Search Everywhere ( double-shift) and search for Database. When starting Rider, we notice a Database tab hiding in the corner of our development environment. Rider is no exception! I recently reached for DataGrip, our amazing database administration tool, only to remember that Rider has many of the same features. This means that when we improve one IDE, our other IDE’s usually also benefit from our improvements. All of our IDE’s are built on the same core IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition. Underwhelming first looks at the gameplay and multiple delays did nothing but assuage those fears in most fans. More than five years lie between Halo 5 and Halo Infinite, enough time for fans to worry that the game they tought of when they thought Halo was maybe a thing of the past. Reload animations and cutscenes can stutter It didn’t get a pass from the purists, of course, but the gunplay, fluidity of movement and incredible multiplayer map designs absolutely deliver. After the missteps of Halo 4’s Call of Duty-esque approach, Halo 5: Guardians managed to successfully transition Halo’s legendary multiplayer modes into something fit for modern players. It wasn’t all bad, though – Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer was truly exceptional. Halo 5’s campaign also assumed every player had read all of the Halo novels, and it’s story was horribly convoluted and bloated as a result. Two of the series’ beloved stalwarts were now brandished as baddies, and unsurprisingly, that never sat quite right with fans. While it’s never a good idea to make a fan-favorite character into a heel, 343 Industries decided that Chief’s faithful AI companion, Cortana, would also turn rogue. Throw in dreary four-player co-op that never felt fun to play due to the awful Promethean enemies – and frankly broken AI when playing alone – and it’s easy to argue that Halo 5 might feature the worst campaign of the entire series. We did at least get to play as Chief, but only sparingly, as the majority of the campaign’s missions revolved around Locke and his band of equally uninspiring teammates. Instead, we were left to chase Master Chief across the galaxy as Spartan Locke – one of the driest and most boring individuals we’ve ever encountered. Its marketing campaign promised an exciting story that centered on a supposed betrayal by Master Chief, but that never actually transpired. Let's just say it – Halo 5: Guardians got a lot of things wrong. If you ever wanted to be master and commander of a miniature Halo army, Halo Wars 2 lets you do exactly that.ĭoesn't do fan-favourite characters justice While it’s almost an impossible task to cram everything that makes Halo great into an entirely new genre, Halo Wars 2 did a fine job at nailing the fundamentals, and it’s awesome to see armies of soldiers collide with Brutes and Covenant forces from a top-down perspective. Halo Wars 2 is a fast-paced game that has a fairly engaging story that focuses on a new menacing villain, Atriox, and there’s a generous amount of content for players to delve into. And in many ways, renowned strategy developer Creative Assembly absolutely achieved this. Halo Wars 2 was a valiant effort that attempted to pack the core elements of the Halo universe into an RTS game. But Halo Wars 2 is worthy of a mention, partly because the game’s main antagonists, The Banished, are the enemy faction you face off against in Halo Infinite. It might seem unfair to pit Halo Wars 2 against the main entries in the series – it’s a real-time strategy game after all. The show’s five seasons are neatly summarized in an early musical number, “ Happily Ever After,” detailing not only the series arc but, as it is equally important, each of the four main characters’ development over the course of the series. The Steven Universe movie - which premiered on Labor Day and will run an encore presentation on September 7 - serves as a sort of series-in-miniature, encapsulating the themes Sugar’s show has so well established. Over the course of five seasons, creator Rebecca Sugar’s motley cast of human beings and alien Gems learns many lessons, but paramount among them is this: Growth comes from choosing to confront one’s traumatic experiences in spite of hardships and is founded on self-acceptance and healthy relationships built on empathy and mutual support.
